Ni Chicha Ni Limonada (Neither beer nor lemonade) takes its cue from the Alzate ceramics of Colombia. In 1912 the Alzate family were exposed for having produced fake pre-Columbian ceramic artifacts that were internationally acclaimed.
Nicholson conflates traditional South American and pre-Columbian art making practices with her own in an attempt to insert herself back into Latin American history, calling into question ideas of cultural identity and authenticity. Nicholson’s work creates a transcultural dialogue that merges aesthetics, processes, history and vernaculars.
Ni Chicha Ni Limonada is heavily influenced by the Silletas from the Annual Flower Festival in Medellin. A silleta is a wooden device made to transport and display flower arrangements that are pictorial depictions of Colombian life and culture.
