about us
Firstdraft is where the future of contemporary art emerges, through a program that champions experimentation, risk and inclusion.
Firstdraft has been supporting emerging and early-career artists and bringing experimental practices to audiences since 1986. Established as an artist-run-initiative, its longevity is testament to the sustained commitment of countless artists, writers, curators and arts professionals involved with Firstdraft over the last four decades. With a commitment to positioning creative practitioners at the centre of all that we do, we include artists' voices in decision-making and champion diverse practices, people and programs.
Firstdraft is supported by the New South Wales Government through Create NSW, the Australian Government through Creative Australia, and the City of Sydney through its Creative Spaces Program.
Firstdraft is a member of Contemporary Art Organisations Australia (CAOA), a national network of fifteen public, independent, non-collecting contemporary art organisations from all Australian states and territories that advocates for the small-to-medium contemporary visual arts sector in Australia. Firstdraft also co-convenes All Conference, a national organising network comprising fifteen artist-led, experimental and cross-disciplinary arts organisations.

goals
Supporting the next generation of contemporary art
Firstdraft will platform, program and propel Australia’s contemporary art community by providing opportunities for risk-taking and elevating experimental practices. We will do this by leading the sector in creating a supportive and caring environment, offering a space where bold ideas and the next generation of creatives can thrive.
Broad and inclusive programming
Firstdraft strives to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for audiences to experience diverse voices and exchange stories. Our ongoing commitment to an open call process and targeted strategic programming demonstrates our dedication to providing opportunities for artists from all backgrounds and contexts. Firstdraft will continue our work in actively eliminating barriers to access and perceived barriers while extending the reach of our program for visitors, artists and communities.
Organisational sustainability & growth
We are committed to strong and ethical governance, safe work practices, sustainable finances and succession planning, staff wellbeing, and whole-of-organisation professional development.
Collaboration & partnerships
Through strategic and timely collaborations and partnerships, Firstdraft will provide new opportunities for the artists and communities that we work with to increase their access to generating and experiencing contemporary art practice.
Fit-for-purpose accommodation
Firstdraft is working towards securing a permanent, accessible home, to enable our ongoing support of the contemporary arts community through exhibition and studio spaces.
