Around the Outside #1 | Our Bodies, Our Archives

Around the Outside #1 | Our Bodies, Our Archives

Event: 17.04.16 12:00-4:00pm

Come and join us for a beer and snag at the first instalment of Around the Outside 2016 titled 'Our Bodies, Our Archives'.

---->>>>>

Understanding the archive as an infinite body constantly and urgently drawing in related artifacts, 'Our Bodies, Our Archives' (title taken from Annamarie Jagose’s lecture of the same name) embraces the inherently incomplete and expansive nature of the process of selecting, ordering and preserving the past - of making history. Artists, activists and scholars have recently been rethinking the politics of what archives preserve in order to open up questions about how archives shape or can reshape belief systems and power structures. This gets even more interesting when we think about an archive that is Queer in its identity. In ‘Migrating Archives’ E.G Crichton writes, “queer lives are (still) frequently invisible, in life and death...in queer communities where notions of lineage often reside outside bloodlines and marriage contracts, an archive can provide a different form of lineage”. 'Our Bodies, Our Archives' asks, do the holes and silences in a queer archive open up the very notion of an archive to possible future utopias and a multitude of ways of loving and living in the world?
